DERRR in Action: Remi the T-Rex Trains a Bitey Pup

Chewy Chums

Ahoy. Name’s Remi.

I’ve been training pups since the days of the Bone Wars. Don’t let the plush fool ya—I’ve got silicone guts and zero tolerance for unnecessary nippin'.

Today I’m showin' ye how I wrangled a particularly wild young landshark using the official NeverBite™ DERRR method. That’s right: DISTRACT, ENGAGE, RELEASE, RETRIEVE, REPEAT.

Let’s set the scene.

The Bite Heard ’Round the Living Room

The pup's name was Nibbles. Rescue mix. Sweet eyes, sharper teeth. Every hand within three feet was fair game. His humans were at their wits' end.

Remi,” they said, “we need help.”

So I stepped in. Pirate-style.

Step 1: DISTRact

I spotted Nibbles makin’ his move toward a toddler-sized wrist. Quick as a cannonball, I hit the squeaker and flailed into action. NeverBite™ caught his eye faster than a flying biscuit.

Focus? Stolen.

Step 2: ENGAGE

With his teeth off the human, we went straight into tug mode. I bobbed, weaved, and let him latch on. We locked in—pup and puppet—mid-battle.

The key here? Controlled chaos.

Step 3: RELEASE

Mid-fight, I froze. Motionless. Then I gave the signal: “Drop it.”

Took a second, but Nibbles let go. I praised him with a dramatic spin and a celebratory squeak.

Step 4: RETRIEVE

I launched myself across the room like a chicken leg off a buffet table. Nibbles dashed after me, tail waggin’, purpose restored.

He brought me back. No shredded hands. No chaos. Just a focused fetch.

Step 5: REPEAT

We did it again. And again. And again.

Each round, Nibbles bit less wild and listened more. By the fifth cycle, the humans watched in awe. “He’s finally listening,” they said.

I tipped my head and gave a nod. “He’s not just listenin’—he’s learnin’.”

Why DERRR Works (Even on the Toughest Biters)

  • DISTRACT redirects without punishment

  • ENGAGE channels energy into play with purpose

  • RELEASE teaches self-control

  • RETRIEVE creates reward through repetition

  • REPEAT builds lasting habits

Final Word From the Deck

Puppies don’t come trained. But with the right method—and the right crew—you can turn bitey chaos into calm connection.

🏴☠ Need help trainin’ yer own landshark? Grab a NeverBite™ and follow the DERRR. Just like I did with Nibbles.
